My dog keeps vomiting after deworming. Is the medicine working?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

My dog was dewormed yesterday and vomited (undigested food that was fed together with the deworming tablets) after 4 hours of taking the medicine. He had diarrhea but now his poop is ok, but he vomited once again today. Is it normal for a dog to vomit for 2 days after getting dewormed? Did the medicine work or should I get him dewormed again? It’s not the first time I used this tablets and he never reacted like this before.

It is not uncommon for dogs to vomit after medication and generally if it is more then 2 hours after the medication should have worked. As the food was undigested it may not have been absorbed as well as anticipated and it may be worth applying a different type of spot on medication, especially if you are in a heartworm affected area. Contact your local vets office for advice on the local risks and benefits of repeating or not

Hello, sorry to hear about Chewy. It sounds like he may need anti-nausea medication to control his vomiting. I would recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours and then re-introducing a bland diet of plain white rice, boiled skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for 3-5 days after that. If he continues to vomit despite being fasted, if he becomes lethargic, or if he develops diarrhea then he should be evaluated by you veterinarian immediately. In the interim, ensure he has adequate access to plenty of water and liquids. Hope this helps and best of luck.
