Why is my dog rubbing his irritated snout and growling in discomfort?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old

Our dog seems to have some sort of skin irritation on his nostril and upper lip. We think it's itching or irritating him because he's been rubbing his snout into bedding while growling.

Poor Ranger! Although this may be a simple scratch, it may also be an indication of an autoimmune condition. I would recommend getting it checked by your vet given it is causing so much discomfort - they may wish to take some samples from the surface to determine the underlying nature and identify any infection which may have developed on the wound
