My old dog won't eat due to degenerative condition, what can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 15 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

My dog has a degenerative condition, his muscles and nerves in his hind legs have deteriorated badly, my trouble is getting him to eat, I have tried lots of things like mashed potatoes and blended veg. soup, he's gotten very picky, with water too. He's getting very thin. Any suggestions?

Is Bubbles taking any pain medication? If not, I suggest you speak to your vet about getting some. If a dog is in pain you are not likely to get him to eat anything. You are better off using canned dog food or bland meats (like turkey deli meat) to entice him to eat. You can also use plain rice, scrambled eggs and human baby food (meat flavors). Do not use any butter or spices on any of the food you try. Honestly though, if he is painful then he may not eat anything unless you get him some pain relief.
