Dog urine test 1.060: Is it good? When's the best time to test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old

Just tested my dogs urine as vet was concerned it was diluted on Friday and wants to retest in 2 weeks time before starting blood tests etc. The reading came back as 1.060 but I don't understand what this means? Also I tested her first wee of the day, is this the best one to test or should I be testing half way through the a day for a more accurate result? Thanks.

You are testing the urine specific gravity. A result of 1.060 means that the kidneys are working to concentrate the urine. This is a good result. Testing the first urine of the day is correct but you can also test it at other times to give the vet a full picture of what is going on. If the urine was very dilute at one stage it may be because she had just had a lot of water to drink. I suggest you get 2-3 readings a day until you go back to the vet for a follow-up. Best wishes.
