My feral cat has mange. Can I give them medicine in their food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

For a month I have been feeding a cat with obvious mange. The food seems to be helping his strength but he is so miserable . He is a feral cat and I’m trying to figure out how to help him. I know mange is contagious. All the medications are to be applied and that isn’t a option . Is there treatment that can be given in food? Also how do I know what’s best for the cat? Trapping him is possible but I know it will be traumatized. Then what anyway? Any help will be appreciated .

There are a couple different kinds of mange so in order to treat it, you need to know what kind it is. The best option would be to trap the cat and get it to the local Humane Society or your vet so they can spay/neuter the cat (mange is passed to offspring), test for mange and then they can dispense the appropriate medication. There are no over the counter treatments for mange. Trapping is stressful for them but trust me, they get over it quickly. ( https://pets.webmd.com/cats/cat-mange-scabies#1 )
