My cat is chubby. How to diet one cat in a two-cat household?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 9 lbs

I have two cats, and one of them is getting chubby. How do you put one on a diet in a two cat household? I tried putting my svelte kitty’s food on the counter because only he can jump, but the portly puss is a grazer and leaves his food for later, and señor svelte eats that instead. They eat Blue Buffalo Indoor dry food daily, with a shared can of Fancy Feast every Saturday.

Ha ha Senor Svelte, I love it! Him eating the other cat's food may work in your favor, because it's less calories for the bigger cat to eat. You can also try feeding him smaller amounts at a time, or picking it up when he's done, and putting it back when he's ready to eat some more.
