Is my 3.5-year-old ferret weak and slow due to age or illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Ferret | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 2.4 lbs

Is 3 1/2 years old considered almost old for a ferret? Can they start slowing down at this age? Is there a way to show a video clip of him? I have fed him orijen & primal & recently changed to wysong ferret epigen90. Did the karo test to see if it could be low bg but it is not. His poop is fine, lungs sound clear, bpm is within normal range. When the other ferret tackles him he acts so weak and slow, and when I go "save" him he feels so limp. I'm planning on taking him to a vet within a week.

Thanks for reaching out about Willy and including a photo. Age is middle age and not considered old. Just because he did not respond to Karo syrup does not mean he doesn't have an insulinoma. But other conditions possible. A veterinary visit is recommended, but probably sooner than late next week. Monitor appetite and body score if you can. Good luck.
