My dog caught a rat, rabies shot late. What to do to prevent illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 10 months old | 77 lbs

Hello, I’m not from the UK but I stumbled upon this website while searching for information on what to do if my dog caught a rat. I checked the rat and I don’t think he injured it, however, I’m not 100% sure. His rabies vaccination was late and he just had it one day ago. I’m taking him to the vet first thing in the morning but I’m so scared, I want to know if there’s anything to do now to prevent any illnesses until the morning.

Hi, was Sparky up to date with his other vaccinations ? Did the rat bite him ? If he was up to date with his vaccinations, the risk of him catching diseases is very much reduced. If he was bitten by the rat, he should receive some antibiotics and his wound should be flushed. I would recommend that you have him checked over in the morning and in the meantime keep a close eye on him. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
