My young bird has a bump above its tail. Is it a tumor or preen gland?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, my bird has a growth right above his tail. Would you mind checking it out? I’ve looked up pictures of a fat tumor and it looks like that. Take a look. Hope it’s not dangerous. There are no symptoms, just the bump. Also we don’t know how long it’s been there, he’s about a week and a half old. Thank you.

Hi, the picture is a bit fuzzy, but I believe this is likely the uropygial gland. The uropyfial gland is a normal structure that produced oil that birds use to condition their feathers. Not all bird species have these glands, so as long as your bird is a species that should have one, i suspect it could be normal. The best thing to do to be sure (since I can’t be sure from just the picture) would be to have a veterinarian examine your bird and assess this bump. If there is concern it could be abnormal, the vet can perform tests as needed to help get an answer. Good luck!
