My kitten has accidents and a dirty bottom after a food change. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 9 days old

I have a two 10 week old kittens (brother & sister) & the female kitten has just in the last few days started leaving poo pellets around the house & also has a dirty bottom area! I changed their food from a mix of wet & dry whiskas food to just a dry food the vets gave me free with a kitten package (purina proplan original kitten) she has about 55g or less a day. Why would this be happening & how can I try & stop it & get her to clean her bottom?

If you switched the food without a transition, it could be causing some digestive upset and the dirty bottom/accidents you are seeing. Most switches from one pet food to another should be done over a period of 7-9 days to help minimize tummy upset. If her bottom is very dirty, pet wipes or a wet washcloth along with a waterless spray shampoo from your local pet store can be used to clean her bottom. If the problem persists, worsens, or new symptoms appear, a vet visit to rule out any other issues is best.
