My dog is straining to poop but nothing comes out, after soft stool?

my dog has been unsuccessfully trying to poop the last 10 hours but had pooped a large soft stool about 12 hours ago

It is possible that there is no more stool in the colon because the soft poop was the precursor to diarrhea. But the only way to differentiate an empty colon from a constipated colon is to have Buddy examined by a vet.
