Why does my puppy gag, make noises, and regurgitate when eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spanish Water Dog | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 42 lbs

For a few days now, my puppy makes this weird sobbing sound when he eats or drinks water, followed by what seems to be a gag reflex. And one time, he did regurgitate bits of his food. Is this something I should be worried about? I’m asking because our vet assures me that most of the time I’m just worried about nothing and the hubby agrees, and admittedly I do have the tendency to be a helicopter parent.

Some puppies can make noises while they eat, which can be normal, and if Bojangles is eating too quickly he could be choking a little which is causing the gag. Trying to get him to slow down in his eating and drinking with a slow-down bowl (or placing a few tennis balls in the bowl) or feeding smaller meals more frequently may help. If he is choking a lot, acting like he can't breathe or is painful, is vomiting or can't keep anything down, or seems in distress from it, a vet visit to rule out anything is always best.
