Dog coughing, reverse sneezing, lethargic after multiple vet visits?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old

I’m running out of options. I feel so defeated. I have been to about five different offices trying to find answers. At this point my money has been taken and my muffin is getting worse. He’s barely responding to any name that I call him. He seems more scared than ever now. He’s sleeping so much to the point of him not being his playful self within TWO days. He has been coughing and when he sneezes, he reverse sneezes afterwards. I’m so heartbroken. He means a lot to me. Please help me

Without knowing much more about the case there is very little that myself or any other Pet Coach will be able to offer. According to the listing your dog is only a year old. If you have been to five different regular veterinarians and they all are unable to either come to a consensus or figure out what is the problem, referral to a specialist is probably recommended. While I am always sensitive to financial constraints, there sometimes are only so many options available that make the most sense for all parties involved. Coughing and sneezing can be caused by such a long laundry list of possibilities. Through five vets, I have to imagine you have tried all the simplest solutions thus far. At this point, it is probably time to be talking about doing additional diagnostic testing like transtracheal washes, bronchoalveolar lavage, and/or broncho-rhinscopy.
