Is my young mother cat playing too rough with her 7-day-old kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 7 days old

I have 7day old kitten Im feedin as mum isn’t producing enough milk, sadly lost three. Went to the vets for a check up kitten is thriving and mum is well. She produces a little milk so kitten still nurses I top up with formula Mum is still cleaning and spends a lot of time in the same room as kitten but today have noticed she has started to bite and almost play with it whilst making some noises. She is only young herself should I take the kitten away I’m worried she may kill it

It can be normal for a mother to gently bite at a kitten, but if you feel Mum is being aggressive it may be best to allow supervised interactions only so you can intervene if she gets too rough. It is very beneficial for kittens to have time with their mothers, so I would only recommend completely isolating kitten from Mum if she is consistently showing signs of aggression.
