Why is my dog's collar rubbing his skin raw and causing bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 25 lbs

I have a beagle mix that is short legged. His collar has rubbed his skin raw without removing the fur, and today it bled. I have checked for open wounds and found none, I have cleaned him up and do not plan on putting his collar back on. I'm mostly looking for advice as most of the things I have found about chaffing does not include bleeding.

The rust color to the hair could indicate a yeast infection. Since there was bleeding, which indicates significant trauma to the surface of the skin, I would recommend that Soramaru be examined by the vet. Clipping the hair off of the skin in this area may allow you and the vet to better evaluate the damage to the skin and monitor the progress of healing. Depending on the level of trauma, he may need oral antibiotics or anti-inflammatories.
