My cat won't let me trim his nails, even with medication. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My 11 year old cat will not let anyone trim his nails, despite several attempts at medicating him, including gababentin, trazadone, Prozac, and Ativan. Any suggestions? I can’t even get him in his carrier. Last trip to vet, 3 techs (all at once) tried to cut his claws to no (good) effect. By the time the vet entered, the cat was so wild, he just backed out. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If Sherlock is that bad for his nails I would consider sedating him to have them trimmed. You can also have a mobile vet come to your home in case he is better for that. I would also recommend if you try going to the vet again to have the techs not get him wild before they come in. Can you get one nail each time he is sleeping? I would be careful since cat bites can be very serious. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
