Should I castrate my cat? Why is he shedding and not gaining weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | 7 months and 25 days old | 8.8 lbs

hello there doctor i really wanna learn the behavior of my cat. He loves playing with the shadows and he is kinda lazy and i wanna train him. Sometimes he runs away from me i don't know why is it because we hold him too much like he is the apple of our eye. is this also a reason for the shedding of hair? is it better to take him on a walk and should i castrate him? and also he isn't gaining weight he seems perfectly fine he is playing around eating well happy as well but not gaining weight.

At 9 pounds at his age, that is a good size cat. He may not be gaining weight because he is getting to the end of growing and becoming adult size. As long as he is eating and well with no vomiting or diarrhea, I would not worry about his weight currently It is best to have him castrated as this can prevent a lot of behavior problems and health problems in the future. Shedding is normal with longer hair coats. You can add omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils to his diet to help but there is no way to prevent it. Brushing him regularly can help. Most cats are scared and uncomfortable going for walks outside, so he may not do well with that. As long as he plays and gets exercise inside, it probably will not be necessary
