My 5-month-old puppy bites hard. How can I teach him to stop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Belgian Sheepdog | Male | 5 months and 12 days old

how long will it take for Nero to stop biting? And how to teach him not to? I try to stop him from biting by having a toy to play tug of war but that doesn't always happen. also if I try to walk away, ignore him, he follows and starts pulling clothes biting arms and legs until they bruise. If I scream a bit he might stop but after 1 sec he starts biting again. I am hoping that time and age will fix this.

This needs time and consistency. I would recommend ignoring and trading your hand or clothing for something more appropriate. I would also recommend getting chew toys at the local petstore. If this does not resolve or decrease in the next few weeks then I would recommend hiring a trainer to help you with Nero. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thank you and we are happy Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach has been helpful! Puppies will bite when playing, teething or if bored. Keep him busy and active with appropriate chew toys. When he bites hard, a stern "No" or "No bite!" should stop the behavior after which you can provide something for him to chew or bite. Be consistent in correcting his behavior and redirecting him. Praise and reward him when he complies. Stop play or interaction if he doesn't until he settles down.
