Is my dog's sensitive stomach food a real fix or just masking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 10.6 lbs

My dog has sensitive stomach issues. If she has something she doesn’t agree with (which is pretty much everything) after 3 days she has very soft mucous like stool. This has been going on for months. We had her on hyrdrolyzed protein but after a 2 months she started reacting to that as well. Now we have her on hill’s science diet for sensitive stomach which has been working fine. No dog treats. Our vet is aware but she hasn’t really told us if this is a fix or if it’s just masking the problem?

Hello. It sounds like this may be the fix Snowball needed to control her symptoms. As long as she does well on this food, do not try to change & be very careful with treats, scraps, etc. We do not truly know the reason why some dogs develop a food sensitivity, but as long as it is controlled, we consider this a successful fix. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
