My dog's back surgery dent is deeper. Is his weight causing it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 28 lbs

My dog had back surgery a few years ago. He's a corgie/pug mix. He has the body of a corgis bit not quite the muscle structure. He has always had a little dent in his back where the incision was. It seems to have gotten deeper lately. Should I be worried? He is a few pounds overweight.

I do not think you need to worry about the dent so much as you should worry about Dexter's weight. Being overweight puts a strain on his spine and can actually cause this dent get deeper as the weight pulls down his whole body. I suggest you discuss a weight loss program with your vet, such as how much exercise he is allowed (due to the former surgery) and possibly feed some weight control food. You can also go to your vet every week and weigh your dog. Usually this is a free service veterinarians offer. Have the weight recorded. Once he has lost the extra weight, I am sure his back will look like it did before and he will be a lot healthier.
