Why is my dog still bleeding when urinating after penal amputation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 28 lbs

My dog had a penal amputation 8 days ago. He still bleeds (about 1/4 cup) every time he urinates. Is it normal? What can the cause be? An ultrasound scan showed normal kidneys and bladder.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to the surgery to some extent. Some degree of blood in the urine would be expected but not a lot. I do think that it warrants re-evaluation by the veterinarian who did the surgery to make sure that there is nothing wrong going on with the incision or surgical site as those are complicated surgeries. Good luck!
