My dog ate cookie dough and is sick. Is it pancreatitis or poisoning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

I fed my moms 27 pound Boston terrier a teaspoon of raw sugar cookie dough on Easter and it has been throwing up since and the doctor said he might have pancreatitis. He hasn't been eating much until yesterday he had a little chicken. Could I have poisoned him with that?

Yes. Unfortunately cookie dough is not good for dogs. He could have pancreatitis but he could also have salmonella. If the dough had chocolate chips those can also be toxic to dogs. You need to get him back to the vet for treatment - both pancreatitis and salmonella can be deadly if left untreated. Pancreatitis can also cause permanent damage to the pancreas making this a lifelong condition. I highly recommend you not feed him anything but food made for dogs in the future. Best wishes.

Poor Fluffy! If his vomit smells like chocolate, I would suspect that he has gotten into chocolate. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and vomiting is a sign of that toxicity. There can be other more serious chocolate toxicity symptoms including heart failure, seizures, and death. I would take Fluffy into an emergency vet immediately for treatment. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I hope this helps!

In most cases it's not chocolate poisoning, just an upset stomach from the cookie dough. If you know the approximate amount of chocolate, it's type and your dog's weight, you can get an idea of the toxicity risk with the help of chocolate toxicity calculator ( you can find those on Google or as apps on your mobile). If the toxicity shows to be high you should take him to the vet right away.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chocolate chips in cookie dough are usually semi-sweet which has a moderate amount of cocoa. As cocoa contains compounds known as meyhylxanthines such as caffeine and theobromine, they can cause hyperexcitability, elevated heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, tremorring, seizing, and even death. The good news is, these signs are dose-dependent, and it sounds like Riley has likely ingested a low dose for his weight. You can check out the chocolate toxicity calculator at petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity. It is always safest to have a vet examine and discuss induction of vomiting, but Riley is unlikely to have any major issues from this amount of chocolate. Other things to worry about would be if he ate any plastic, other foods, raw foods, or spoiled foods as these could cause illness as well. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, inappetence, diarrhea, tremorring, and abnormal behavior in addition to the signs of chocolate toxicity. Have him seen immediately if you notice anything described above. Hope this helps!
