Cat has painful lump & bite marks from outside. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 7 days old | 8 lbs

My cat recently got outside and came back 13 hours later with a lump on his side with two bite marks above it (he’s an indoor cat but somehow snuck outside) he wouldn’t let me touch his side due to it being to tender and painful. I have no money due to low income so I can’t take him to the vet . I’m so?scared. Is there anything I can do at home if it’s an abcsss? vet said I could use warm compress. Don’t have clippers to snip his fur. Can I give warm bath and use ointment or antibiotic after?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly there is nothing else you can do at home besides what has been previously mentioned. If you are very worried, call your local SPCA to see if they offer low cost Veterinary Care. Ideally the abscess needs to be lanced (opened) to allow drainage. We can not recommend that you do this at home. If Bubba doesn't see a Vet the abscess will likely open at some point on it's own. Bite wounds and infections are painful. Sometimes cats feel very sick for a few days before the abscess ruptures because they tend to get a fever. I would just wash the area locally and not give him a full bath. You can see if you can borrow clippers from someone. I hope this helps!
