My dog mated but isn't pregnant. What are the causes and solutions?

I have a GSD/Doberman mix which doesn't give birth after mating.What are the possible causes and solutions to this?

There are a couple of reasons why Bambi isn't getting pregnant. The most common cause is bad timing, not mating at the optimal timing during her heat cycle. The best time to mate a female dog is from 9-14 days of her heat cycle. Other causes include a failure to ovulate, cycle normally, refusing to accept a mate, an inability to conceive, or an inability to maintain the pregnancy. First step is to have her seen by a vet to make sure everything is normal reproductively. I'd make an appointment to have her seen by a vet sometime soon to discuss her problem with getting pregnancy. Best of luck!

IF you really want her to be pregnant I would recommend taking her to a reproductive veterinary specialist. It is important to make sure she is ovulating and her uterus is healthy and can carry puppies. Some dogs like people cannot get pregnant. The most common reason why dogs refuse to mate is that it is the wrong time in the estrous cycle. If mating is attempted too early in the cycle, the bitch may not be receptive. A female raised as a house pet may be a shy breeder because of inadequate social contact with members of her own species. Mate preference, too, can be a determining factor. A bitch may refuse one male dog but may like another. I suggest you give her more time. Make sure you introduce her to the male at the right time in her cycle or, better yet, keep the two together throughout her entire cycle. If she hasn't been well socialized with other dogs then work on that. That may be why she doesn't know how to act around the male. If all else fails you can resort to artificial insemination. You can speak to your vet about how to get that done.

If Bambam is still bleeding, I would suspect she is pregnant. It's not normal to be bleeding this long after being mated. You can have her seen by a vet to confirm if she is pregnant or not. I would also strongly urge you to spay her either now if she i's pregnant, or after she weans this litter should she be pregnant. Dogs over the age of five should never be bred. Best of luck.

how likely is it that my female dog is pregnant even if they didnt lock up when mating... ?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is possible for a female dog that is in heat to get pregnant even if they didn't tie. It all depends on whether the male dog ejaculated or not. You can run a pregnancy test and/or an ultrasound at 28 days or have an X-ray done at day 50. Write down the date when they mated. Dogs are pregnant for 60-63 days. I hope this helps!

Banzai could have a problem with her ovaries such as a tumor or cysts, her uterus or other issues resulting in infertility. Your best bet would be for your veterinarian to do an exam and potentially do cytology or other tests to see what her condition could be caused by. Sometimes antibiotics are helpful other times further testing like ultrasound or even surgery is needed.

Sometimes a mating doesn't take, and the cat doesn't get pregnant. It could also be due to a health problem, such as an infection of the uterus called a pyometra. I would take her into the vet for an exam to make sure she is healthy. Cats go into heat multiple times a year, so if she didn't get pregnant this time, she could possibly get pregnant her next heat.

No, you can't assume that just because Kenzi is still interested in male dogs means that the mating was unsuccessful. Female dogs will continue to mate during their heat cycle, and you won't know if the mating was successful or not until at least three weeks after their mating. She will stop mating when her heat is over. I would wait at least three to four weeks, and then take her into the vet. The vet can do a blood test or use an ultrasound to see if she is pregnant or not. Best of luck.

There are many things that could be going wrong. She could have some kind of infection or an anatomic problem. She is also a bit on the older side especially for her breed. Even though the stud has aired puppies in the past his sperm quality may not be as good for various reasons. I’d recommend seeing a vet to start - your best bet would be to find someone who is particularly interested in reproduction in your area. They would probably recommend blood work after an exam and might recommend some infectious disease testing. When she is ready to go into heat they might recommend hormone testing to help determine the ideal time to breed.

During mating tie is not taking place. What can i do?
This may be a problem the male has. The only thing you can do is to take both dogs to the veterinarian and have them examined. The male may have a problem with the bulbous part of the penis in that it may not be able to expand and tie, the female may have a vaginal problem. There may be a libido problem, or the female may not be ready. This can be examined and ruled out by your veterinarian. Please see your vet for an exam, preferably during this heat cycle.

The only way to know for sure Zyra is pregnant is have her seen by a vet in another couple of weeks for x-rays and a blood test looking for the hormone relaxin to confirm that she is pregnant. It is possible that she may not get pregnant off five stud sessions if she wasn't mated at the right time in her heat, but hopefully she is pregnant. It's lovely you want to be a vet! The best advice I can give you is to study really hard and get lots of animal experience in a vet's office. It's not an easy road to become a vet, it's a lot of time and hard work, but if you apply yourself and work for it, it can happen :-)
