My dog has a sebaceous cyst on his head. Is it safe to leave it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 57 lbs

My dog has a bump on his head. The vet thinks it’s a sebaceous cyst and said to leave it alone. However, this bump has been there for at least six months. The vet thinks it’s a cyst because he had one on his paw that he drained. The bump on his head has stayed relatively the same size but I’m concerned.

Trust your vet. As long as the mass does not grow or cause a problem, it is better to leave it alone. Should it start to grow or burst or ooze or get infected, it can be surgically drained or removed.
