My friend's hyperactive dogs need training. How do I suggest it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 16 years and 3 months old

My fiancé's best friends have two 1 year olds, a hyperactive vizsla & a German shepherd, that have such bad behavior that I don't want to visit their house anymore. The pups jump & claw you, try to play-bite, & run around the house in a frenzy. They have routinely gotten out of their crates & torn up the house too. I want to suggest professional training or offer to help train them (I have some knowledge in dog training, though it may be too big of a project for me) but I don't know what to say.

Hello. Great question! Without knowing everyone involved the best advice I can give you in this situation is to just be honest. Tell them in a nice way that you don't appreciate the dogs jumping on, clawing and play-biting you and it is making you not want to visit their home. Then ask them if they have ever considered getting a professional dog trainer. If they are receptive be prepared with some names/numbers of local trainers that will come to their house to help them. I think most people that are resistant to getting a trainer are afraid that it will be very expensive but really it isn't. If they get angry at the suggestion then they are immature and it is best not to be involved with them anyway (in my opinion). I think your fiance' should handle this. They are his friends. It would probably go over better coming from him. Just a thought. Best wishes!
