Why is my older cat acting distant since I got a new kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 6 lbs

I recently brought a new kitten into my one cat household. My "older" cat is a 2 year old persian who has always been very friendly. He always would follow me room to room not wanting to be alone, lay on my lap, sleep with me at night and be very vocal. Ever since the new kitten arrived he has been very distant and doesnt do any of the things he used to. However, he seems to really like the new kitten and they play and cuddle. While kitten was at vet today older cat was back to normal and happy

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This behavior is likely due to the new kitten. The good news is that Nolan is very likely to go back to his normal self fairly soon. This is not an uncommon reaction in cats when a new cat is introduced to the household. Good luck and have a good night!
