My cat keeps returning to his old home. What can I do to stop him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old

My cat is nearly 5 years old. The last year he has not settled in his new home and has managed to find his way back to his original home 13 times and it is 3 miles away taking him 4 days to get there. I have tried all the know ways to combat this, like keeping him in for 2 weeks, leaving litter in the garden, keeping him entertained at home. He is allowed out, he’s ok for 2/3 days then on day 4 he’s off again! I’m at my wits end and considering rehoming but really don’t want to do this. HELP!!

I'm sorry you are having this issue with Buca but you are not likely to change this behavior. The best option you have is to keep him indoors only. I wish there was quick fix but there isn't one for this problem. My only other thought is to plant some catnip in your yard to see if that will keep him closer to home. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
