Should I worry if my spayed dog leaks pee after walks occasionally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

Our 3-4 year old spayed dog is 100% potty trained, however once every few weeks-months, after a walk (where she has peed multiple times), she will leak about a tablespoon of pee once we get in the house after a walk. She is otherwise acting 100% normally - is this something we should look into further? She has only done this 2 or 3 times in the last year (since we've had her)

This can be from a hormonal imbalance due to being spayed. If this becomes more frequent there is medication to control the urinary incontinence. They will recommend a urinalysis to make sure there is no medical problem in the urine then they can prescribe medication. Usually a low dose of medication needs to be given lifelong. As long as this is so infrequent I would not medicate my dog yet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Riley.
