My cat's skin is crackly after fluids. How long will the air last?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

I had to administer sub qs to my cat at home yesterday and I did it wrong because there was no pocket of fluid and it seems a lot of air was pushed under the skin. It’s been almost 24 hours and he still hasn’t absorbed the air. He’s still very crackly to touch. My vet said this isn’t fatal just uncomfortable for the cat and it should pass in a few hours but it’s going on 24 hours. I need to give him fluids at 330? What should I do?

If Windsor needs his subcutaneous fluid treatment, choose a different area on his body to administer them. The air under the skin (subcutaneous emphysema) can take longer to resolve in some cats, but it will resolve unless there is an undiagnosed underlying condition. If it persists for more than 48 hours, have him rechecked by your veterinarian.
