How to stop puppy from biting older dog's face and drawing blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 26 days old | 15 lbs

My new 12 week old male puppy and my 2 year old girl love to play. He's bitten her cheeks and drawn blood. I let them play but intervene if he starts biting her face as she now has a couple of small wounds. What's the right thing to do? Am I messing up the hierarchy? I can't stand to see her poor face like that. He's good when I say no, but I also want her to be confident.

If this behavior is undesired, I would look into using a spray bottle filled with water and spritzing him in the face while saying "off!" at the same time. I would also consider using an empty can filled with coins and then tossing it on the floor so it makes a loud noise to startle him so that he stops the behavior. He needs to realize that this is undesired behavior and that these negative things happen whenever he does this behavior. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
