Why is my dog licking her genitals and humping? Is it a UTI or heat?

I’m assuming you mean she is licking her vulva. This could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or other lower urinary tract disease like bladder stones. If you’re seeing bloody discharge from the vulva it could be a heat cycle but she shouldn’t seem painful. If the behavior continues I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! From your pictures her vulva looks normal. Excessive licking of any region of the body isn't normal. Signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI) are licking excessively, increased frequency of urination, straining or urinate, or urinary accidents. Puppies tend to normally make a lot of noise when they sleep. That isn't a classic sign of a UTI. The best thing to do is to collect a urine sample with a flat plastic tray or small frying pan and have your Vet check the urine for infection or crystals. Be sure you have had her examined and her vaccines started. Other reason or licking is leaking urine (incontinence), puppy vaginitis, or a skin infection in the vulva area (which isn't seen on your pictures. I wish Penny the best!

Possible causes are: leaking urine (urinary incontinence, usually see their bedding is wet after sleeping), vaginitis, urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine that could be causing a burning feeling. I recommend having S examined by your Vet. Bring a urine sample with you so they can check it for crystals and infection. She may be put on antibiotics if there is an infection, a special diet if crystals and if urinary incontinence is suspected then Proin or DES. I hope this helps and good luck!

Bacterial UTI's can cause dogs to feel urgency and burning and thus have accidents or lick a lot. Another possibility is urinary incontinence. This is leaking of urine when the dog is at rest due to weakening of the urinary sphincter. It is more common in spayed dogs. If she has a UTI then your Vet will likely prescribe antibiotics. If her urine is normal they may consider a medication to help prevent leaking of urine (Prion). A problem with the anal glands is certainly a possibility - sometimes the dog knows something is not right back there but they don't get the exact location correct. It could also be a urinary issue. It is possible she has a UTI and there is some burning in the vulva that is causing her to react this way. Another option is an obsessive compulsive type disorder (OCD). I suggest that you have your vet check the anal glands and also perform a urinary test to check for infection. If all that can be ruled out then I suspect it could be an OCD type behavior. A dog urinating in their sleep could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or urinary incontinence. An infection, kidney disease, or an endocrine abnormality could change the appearance or smell of her urine. Many dogs urinate when they are excited and that part is totally normal. This may be a sign of juvenile vaginitis, which is a condition that will go away when she has her first heat and is an indication not to spay before she has had her first heat. By licking herr vagina, however she is introducing bacteria and irritating the tissue, and it may be necessary to put a cone on her to keep her from licking as well as a necessity for prescription antibiotics. The inflammation points to this. She could also be having her first preestrus (bleeding before the first heat) and could be cleaning herself excessively. As you wrote above, this could also be a UTI. I suggest you have her examined by your vet so any possible infection can be treated and she will stop the excessive licking which is rather detrimental.

The signs you are describing may certainly be due to a UTI. When dogs have a UTI, they have a burning and urge to urinate even when their bladder is empty, so they continually try to urinate. It may be that she has a urinary infection changing her smell that has caused this behavior. I recommend a urinalysis just to be sure. Otherwise this can be a way to show dominance over her if some of the household dynamics have changed. The investigation should start with urine sample analysis - it is easy, quick and gives instant answer if the dog has urinary tract infection or not. If the urine analysis comes back normal, Lucky should have a blood test to check her kidneys function. If that is normal too, she should be started on medications for urine incontinence, which does happen to some neutered female dogs.
