My dog smells weird on Cefpodoxime. Is this a normal side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 17 lbs

Hi- my dog has been on Cefpodoxime since Sunday night and I noticed that he smells different - just his general scent and even his stool. Is this a normal side effect? He is on the medicine as a preventative since he had to have a portion of his dew claw removed. Thank you

That is a very interesting observation. I have not had any clients mention that side effect, but most of the scents that we have are regulated by the normal yeast and bacteria on our skin and in our GI tract. If those yeast or bacterial number or types are changed by an antibiotic, it certainly could result in the body having a different scent. I would not expect any long term changes once the antibiotic is finished, but I would certainly keep an eye on it. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question.
