My dog's leg is swollen and limping after dog park. Is a vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Male | neutered | 8 months and 14 days old | 35 lbs

My dogs leg is swollen in one spot and he is limping. He whines occasionally but is still walking and eating normal; some trouble on the stairs. He will not “sit” or “down” either but still managed to counter surf. I just noticed it yesterday when he was running at the dog park. Should I take him to the vet or let it rest a few days first?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you can see an an obvious swelling, I recommend taking Trigger to the vet. Many times with mild limping we don't see any swelling at all. So I worry that Trigger may have torn a muscle or have an abscess or other injury that may cause worse problems if left alone. Until he is seen, I recommend keeping him confined (as possible with a pup). If he is crate trained, then keep him crated and leash walks only until he is evaluated to prevent furhter injury. I hope he's back to normal quickly!
