Is my goat pregnant? Udders developing after steroid injection.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 130 lbs

My goat had a steroid injection a week ago. Since then she’s begun developing udders. She was in with the male however hasn’t gotten pregnant for two years. Can steroids make udders begin to form or is there the possibility she genuinely is pregnant?

Hello. Without knowing how long ago the doe was in with the buck, I cannot rule out pregnancy, but a steroid injection could cause a pregnant animal to abort, so watch for any unusual discharge. This might also be a false pregnancy, idiopathic lactation (lactogenesis), mastitis or some other infection. I would suggest having your doe tested for CAE, & possibly tested to see if she is developing mastitis. Your veterinarian can do this for you very easily. Of course, you can always wait to see if she is indeed pregnant. That would be very nice! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
