My dog is limping with hip pain after playing. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 80 lbs

My dog is acting like she sprained a muscle in her leg playing with other dogs on Saturday but it hasn’t gotten much better the past two days. It seems to be okay in the morning but when she starts to run around and then lay down, she starts to limp when she gets up. The pain seems to be more in her hip because it takes her a long time to get her leg lifted onto the couch. Is this probably just a sprained muscle that will go away or could it be more serious for a vet visit?

We often see torn ACLs in large breed dogs with limping in the hind limbs. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon. An orthopedic exam and possibly an x-ray may be recommended to help determine the diagnosis and best treatment plan. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
