My dog ate Werthers Originals. Is this candy safe for a 35lb dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 35 lbs

My chiweenie ate about 19 Werthers Originals. Just the candy, not the wrappers. Should I be concerned? He ways about 35lbs.

That's not good that Charlie ate some many Werthers! Werthers contains sugar, which too much of can and does cause GI upset in dogs. It could be that eating this number of candies could cause him to vomit or have diarrhea. In case that happens, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, he appears to have stomach pain, he stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Oh poor Pablo! It sounds like he has an upset stomach from eating all those candy. As long as they weren't sugar free (which would contain xylitol that is poisonous to dogs), more than likely they will cause him stomach upset. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Trudy! Oh that's not good she ate all that chocolate and sugar. The good news is that white chocolate isn't toxic to dogs, but it does cause GI upset which you are seeing. The same for the sugar. I can give a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Your dogs should be ok. There's a lot of sugar in it, which isn't good for them, but it isn't toxic. You may see some GI upset from it, and if that happens, I recommend withholding food and feeding a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in their normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food or on the bland diet, I would take them into the vet.
