My dog has a sore tooth and is in pain. How can I calm him down?

My has a sore tooth, he keeps whining, running around the house and trying to plant the right side of his face into the ground (the side his bad tooth is on), what can I do to get him to calm down

It sounds like this tooth is really hurting Meatball! The only way to get him to calm down is to have this tooth treated, and to administer pain medications. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give, many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would take him into a vet today for this problem, from your description of his behavior, he is showing you he is in a lot of pain and is very uncomfortable. This is not something that should wait to be treated. Please take him into a vet now, best of luck!

Unfortunately, there really isn't much you can do about this at home - there are no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe for use in dogs, so your best option is to give him soft food until you're able to get him in to see the vet. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I think it's best if Little Bit is in a lot of pain to take him into an ER vet now.

My dog just had a tooth extraction 8 hours ago. She's been crying ever since I brought her home. I don't know what to do to help her.
It could be that Chlie is in pain from the tooth extraction, but unfortunately there are no safe OTC human pain medications you can give. Many of them are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would give your vet a call right away to get some pain medications for her. If you can't reach your vet, I would take her into a pet ER to be seen.

My dog has a tooth extraction & finished carprofen yesterday. Today he's clearly in discomfort and my vet doesn't have an on call. Is there anything I can give him overnight to calm him and ease the pain?
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Odin still seems uncomfortable from his tooth extraction. You may try applying an ice pack wrapped in a small towel to the swollen or painful area. I DO NOT recommend giving him any pain medications that intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I recommend contacting your veterinarian during normal business hours to ask for other suggestions. If it has been this long and he is still painful, there may be a complication that needs to be addressed. I hope this is helpful!

Poor thing! I can’t imagine breaking one of my teeth at the gumline. I understand that you are very concerned about her experiencing pain and I am certain that it is painful to have a broken tooth at the gumline. But here is the problem, most over-the-counter pain medications that would be strong enough to help her will interfere with tissue and blood clotting. Why does this matter? Because most likely your veterinarian will recommend either extraction of that tooth or restorative surgery for that tooth. Both procedures will involve anesthesia as well as tissue manipulation. So I cannot recommend you start any kind of pain medication right now at all. But never underestimate the power of simply petting and loving your dog during the six hour wait. Studies have shown that simply by safely and lovingly stroking and speaking to your pet can provide a lot of unexplained stress and pain relief. No, human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Many are toxic and can be fatal if given. If Mia is in a lot of pain, you need to take her into a vet immediately to get pain relief. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Psychological stress can make pain worse, and going to the vet can be stressful for a dog. You are correct that Chunk needs dental surgery, and while at home, I would feed him canned dog food, or soak his dry food in gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth to make it softer. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The only safe pain medications for dogs are available by prescription from the vet, and if you feel he is in pain, you can talk to your vet about prescribing some for him. If he is crying, he is pain. I absolutely DO NOT recommend you give him any medication at home. Dogs can be very sensitive to human over the counter medications and these medications can interfere with what the vet wants to give him tomorrow. He will be fine for one day. Just don't try to touch the face/jaw and give him some soft foods to eat (if he will eat). I am a bit worried that he may have a fractured (broken) jaw or an infected tooth.

This is very sad, The teeth need to be removed by a vet. There are no over the counter pain medications we can recommend. Those medications are not very safe. If the dog is in that much pain it needs to see a vet. Even if your friend cannot afford the dental cleaning, usually pain medications are not that expensive. I, personally, would be more worried about the infection that is present in the mouth than the pain.

I'd take him into a vet as soon as possible to be checked out and get pain medication. If he's extremely painful, I'd rush him into an ER vet. Until he sees the vet, rest him as much as possible.
