Why is my Chinese water dragon gasping with a swollen vent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a Chinese water dragon who sounds like he's gasping for air. He doesn't want to eat so I try to feed him when his mouth is open and he takes it in but he pukes after a day or two or he shakes his head side to side very hard like he is going to vomit but doesn't. His but (as you can see in the picture) Looks swollen or something, I am not sure because that has never happened to him before. I went to a pet hospital and the Dr. doesn't know what's wrong but wants scans done for $500. ICannot

Did you use a vet that is used to treating reptiles? If not, you need to. Regular vets that only treat dogs and cats do no know the ins/outs of treating these guys. This looks to me like Raiphy has the start of a vent prolapse. He needs treatment by a vet. This is not something you can fix at home. I found this vet only 30 minutes drive from you. He even does house calls. ( http://www.scottmedlin.com/services ) Please contact this vet. I doubt a $500 scan is needed to help Raiphy.
