My cat has a raspy meow, sneezes, and swallows hard. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old

Josie's voice has changed over the last 30-45 days ago to a raspy meow, she sneezes a lil bit & now I notice her swallowing hard. About a week ago she was running through the house playing & out of nowhere she started acting confused/ out of it, what's going on with her? She's back to normal but this really scared me.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The signs you are describing are definitely concerning. The change in meow and what sounds like difficulty breathing can be caused by nasal polyps, masses, or infections. I recommend having Josie seen by a vet as soon as possible. She may need x-rays or further imaging to determine exactly what is going on. I hope this helps and that Josie feels better soon!
