My dog still has worms after deworming. Should I give another dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | 5 lbs

My chihuahua has worms in his poop, I gave him half of a Bayer quad dewormer pill about two weeks ago but he is still showing signs of worms? Should I retreat and give him the other half of the pill? Thank you.

Hi. Poor Gizmo. It is important to have fecal sample tested and get an exact answer of what the parasite is. It could be the over the counter medication doesn't cover the particular parasite. It is also common that the over the counter medications fail at treatment. I suggest you get a proper prescription from your veterinarian.

It is important to remember that not every parasite is treated with the same medication. Since you are still seeing worms in Fez's stool, I recommend taking a stool sample to his vet so that it can be microscopically evaluated with a fecal flotation test. Based on these results, your vet will be able to prescribe the most effective dewormer for the parasite(s) present.
