My dog's stool is still soft after meds. How can I firm it up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Vizsla | Male | neutered | 7 months and 12 days old | 52 lbs

3/21 took Copper to the vet because he had vomited. They ran a superchem and CBC panel. Everything came back normal but gave Rx for Royal Canin gastro low fat for 2 days. 3/24 was his comprehensive exam, reran the test from 3/21 all normal, but fecal exam showed abnormal bacteria. 3 more days RC gastro and 10 days metronidazole. 1.5 days left of metronidazole and his stool was 1/2 firm 1/2 mush. This evening still very soft/mushy. Any suggestions to firm it back up or check with vet again?

Hi, Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would recommend following up with Copper's veterinarian before his medication runs completely out. They may want to extend his prescription or recheck him. Be sure to feed whatever diet his vet has recommended with no other food or treats. Sometimes a probiotic, such as FortiFlora, can help. I would speak to his vet and follow their suggestions. Diarrhea can be caused by anything from stress to dietery indescretion to food intolerance or infection. I hope Copper is back to normal soon.
