My dog is limping. Is it safe to cut his ingrown nail before the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

Hi, my cocker spaniel is limping and not putting any weight on his back leg. He is booked in at the vets this Tuesday, but I have noticed one of his nails is curled under and may be digging into his foot to cause him discomfort. Is it best to wait until we see a vet or attempt to cut his nail?

I would cut the nail as it can grow into the pad causing pain and infection. Clean the pad with hydrogen peroxide afterwards. If he's still lame then bring him in Tuesday for an exam as the lameness may not be caused by the nail. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Marley.
