Dog licking genitals, green discharge, red bumps after recent shave?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spanish Water Dog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 30 lbs

Hi, I’m the parent of a 2-year old Male Spanish Water Dog. I recently got him shaved down as a result of matting and knitting at my local PetSmart and I’ve noticed he’s been licking his genitals a lot. 2-3 days pass and I notice his penis is secreting a greenish-yellowish substance and Im afraid it might be a result of infection? He also has small red bumps around his genital area. I should add that he isn’t neutered also. Any advice??

Hello. The skin irritation is probably from being shaved too close, or possibly even from the shampoo not being completely rinsed from the skin. I would bathe Uno in cool water, no soap & gently dry him. The discharge from his prepuce could be a normal secretion called smegma. It could also be balanoposthitis, inflammation of the glans penis & prepuce with excessive preputial discharge. While mild cases can be self-limiting, more severe cases can lead to abscess formation & scarring. I would recommend having your vet take a look at this soon, especially if you notice any blood in the discharge. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
