My cat ate an Easter lily. Is it toxic? What should I do immediately?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 11 lbs

I had bought my grandma an Easter lily and it looks like my cat has managed to nibble on the leaves and his white coat is covered in yellow pollen. I didn't realize how toxic they were to cats. He threw up a little looks like awhile ago, I gave him some wet food and he ate it not sure what to do, if I should monitor him, since it is Easter Sunday there is no where to take him. Need advise asap.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Louie! Unfortunately, EVERY part of the Lily is very toxic and deadly to cats. It causes acute kidney failure. Time is of the essence and I urge you to take Louie to an open Veterinary Emergency hospital for care. It is not wise to wait until tomorrow because sadly it could be too late to reverse the damage to his kidneys. You could also call the Pet Poison hotline (there is a charge) but they will tell you the same thing. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ I hope this helps and I wish Louie the best! https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-common-plants-that-are-poisonous-to-pets/

True Lily’s are incredibly toxic to cats. Even licking water that the lily has been in can be toxic. It can cause an upset stomach right after ingestion, but the scarier part is that it causes kidney failure, which may not be evident for a few days or even weeks. I would recommend that you have Mars checked out by a vet or call the Pet Poison Helpline to see if he needs treatment. https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/lilies/

Yes, I would definitely get Sphynxie checked out by a vet immediately. Lilies are toxic to cats, and this includes all parts of the plant. Even small ingestions of it can cause acute kidney failure, and signs of this includes vomiting, anorexia, and increased water consumption. She should be seen by a vet now to have blood taken to check how her kidneys are functioning. Please take her into a vet immediately.
