My cat has open abscesses. Can I wait a week to take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 12.5 lbs

My cat has two open abcess on her back. I’ve been draining them and cleaning them with warm salt water twice a day. I am planning to take her to the vet for antibiotics but I can’t afford it for another week. It will be a week and a ahalf with her having them. Will she be okay for that long? She’s still drinking water and eating at this point. The holes are getting smaller and I did shave her fur around them to keep them clean. I’m doing everything I can till I can afford to take her to the vet.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. What you are doing is fine and she should be ok to wait to see the veterinarian, especially if they are becoming smaller. One other thing you can do is purchase betadine and dilute this with water until you have a light brown solution. I would use this solution to clean the abscesses twice daily until you get to your vet. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
