Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 3 months old
Recently my old cat has come back home (we thought she may have gone away to die) as excited as we are to have our little moggy back with us, she has us worried. She has come back to us extremely underweight, wheezing, gunk coming from her eyes and nose and has no intention of eating. What could this possibly be? With her coming back it will be an unexpected cost to send her to the vets which we just can’t afford at this time! Is there anything I can do at home for our girl?

It sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection or cold. Use a warm wet cloth to clean her eyes and nostrils. You can use a thin film of Vaseline around her nose to prevent the discharge from sticking to the skin. I recommend warming wet food, fish is best since cats often won’t eat if they can’t smell the food. You can try chicken broth or tuna juice dribbled in her mouth to get some liquid in her. Usually the cold will last a week or two. If you can’t get her to eat she may become dehydrated so a veterinary exam and treatment may be needed to bring her around.
