My old dog is vomiting and has bloody diarrhea. Is a vet visit urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 9 months old | 75 lbs

My old girl hasn't eaten anything today other then grass which brought on bouts of vomiting. She's vomited 5 times and now is having explosive red clay colored water/jelly stools. Should I wait for a vet visit or take her in.

It sounds like Ginger is in need of some vet care sooner than later. She's an older girl and we don't want her to dehydrate anymore than she already has. I would get her into the vet this evening if possible. With tomorrow being Easter, it is going to be emergency hours everywhere regardless, so waiting until tomorrow will not help you from a financial standpoint. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Ginger. I am glad she has an appointment tomorrow as she will likely require some fecal testing and a medication. Do not offer any food tonight. It doesn't sound like she is interested in eating, but more food will further upset her gastrointestinal tract. Do try to encourage her to drink water though to prevent any dehydration. Take her outside frequently to prevent any accidents. Monitor the stool for any blood or mucus as her veterinarian will need this information tomorrow. I hope this information helps!
