My dog's eye is red after a bite. Is it okay to wait for the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 months and 23 days old | 80 lbs

He was bitten about 1 month ago under right eye. It seems it got infected in the past 2 weeks and once I noticed I put antibiotic ointment on it for 5 days and then he got a rash so I stopped the ointment and then it got red again. Is it an infection? He has an appointment Tuesday afternoon. We have a horrible emergency animal hospital, so is it okay to wait for his appt? I want him to have the best care. I've used a wet wash cloth on his eyes every day.

Hello, so sorry that Louie is having this issue. I can't tell from the photo if this is an infection or an allergic reaction (or both). As long as he is acting normally (eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, etc) then I think he is fine to wait until Tuesday. For now you can give him some Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25mg twice a day (by mouth) to see if that will decrease the redness/swelling. You need to be careful putting topical medications near the eye as most substances are not safe if they get inside the eye. Therefore, I would not put anything on it topically. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
