Why is my senior dog suddenly withdrawn, panting, and shaking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

my dog is a small mix, he is about 11 years old and for the past 2 days he has been very distant from everyone in the house and doesn't want to go outside, he seems to get scared easier now and pants and breathes very heavily while shaking, it increases after petting him. I have no idea what is going on. is there anything i can do to help him?

Sounds like Kringle is in some level of distress. Whether or not it is manifesting from pain or true cardiopulmonary pathology is unclear. He should be taken into your veterinarian and examined soon. If you feel he is having any difficulty breathing, which generally does sound like the description you are offering, he should be seen on an emergency basis. The doctors will want to x-ray the chest to assess the presence of a respiratory infection, or a primary cardiovascular/cardiopulmonary disease process. Hope this makes sense.
